Aqualyx® injections for dissolving fat deposits
Aqualyx® injections are used to dissolve fat in specific areas of the body for improved body contouring. This is NOT a weight loss treatment. It is a simple, safe treatment to target troubling fat deposits, double chin and lipomas in the skin.

What can it treat?
Sometimes no matter how good you are with your diet and exercise, there is that area of stubborn fat that troubles you and never really disappears. The cause for this lies in our genetics and the special structure of our fat cells in certain areas. Fat cells stored in the subcutaneous fat tissue are difficult to diminish. We are genetically predisposed to have more fat cells in certain areas of our body that diet and exercise alone can sometimes not correct.
Aqualyx® can be used for most areas of the body to destroy specific fat cells. Common areas include:
- Double chin
- Hips or ‘saddle bags
- Flanks, waist or ‘love handles’
- Abdomen – upper or lower tummy
- Upper arms
- Back or ‘bra-fat’
- Inner knees or thighs
Aqualyx® can also be used as a possible treatment for pseudo-gynecomastia in men, buffalo humps (usually resulting from certain medications) and lipomas (fatty lumps in the skin).

How does it work?
Aqualyx® contains desoxycholan-acid; a secondary bile acid. This acid is produced naturally in the liver to aid the digestion of fat. The fat-dissolving effect of this acid was utilised many years ago by Professor Pasquale Motolese, who developed a synthetically manufactured variant: Aqualyx®.
Very thin, flexible cannulas are used to inject Aqualyx® directly into the subcutaneous fat tissue of the desired area. The active substance locks on the fat cell walls, whose action results in the cell wall becoming unstable and releasing the fatty acid that is stored within. Cell residue is removed by the body’s lymphatic system.
Once these fat cells are successfully destroyed they should not return. However, if you gain weight, it will not stop new fat deposits from being laid down in this area. A good diet and exercise regimen is key to maintaining a healthy weight.
Am I suitable?
At Roseneath Skin Clinic in Guernsey, we start with an in-depth consultation to ascertain your medical history and suitability, ensure you are fully informed and to help us understand the results you are looking for. Most men and women are suitable for treatment. However, this is not an appropriate treatment if you are aiming to lose a large amount of weight, are pregnant, or have certain chronic illnesses or skin conditions in the area.
Does it hurt?
The practitioners at Roseneath Skin Clinic are registered medical professionals with years of experience in giving injections. The treatment is virtually pain-free, as fat tissue is almost free of sensitivity, and Aqualyx® contains an additional local anaesthetic. Immediately after treatment, there may be some redness and swelling, and, as with any injection, a bruise or haematoma can rarely occur. These should subside by themselves.
What should I expect after treatment?

Some patients can have some minor bruising or redness around the injection sites, but this resolves very quickly.

Swelling is common after the treatment, which is a normal part of the inflammatory process. This is more noticeable on the double chin area and can last for two-six days.

Some patients experience some tenderness for a few days, often likened to muscle aches if you have worked too hard at the gym.
Do not apply cosmetics to the area for twelve hours, and avoid direct heat (sauna etc).
The number of treatments needed varies according to the desired degree of the amendment, the dimensions of the fat deposit and the individual reaction of the fat tissue. On average, expect to have around two-five treatments, leaving four weeks between sessions.
It will take at least a month before you can perceive the results; sometimes, the results can take up to three months to be fully apparent. Aqualyx® does not provide significant weight loss or prevent you from gaining weight: healthy nutrition and exercise regimen is important for long-term weight management.
